Bio Statement:

Dr. Julia DeVoy (she/her) is a developmental psychologist based in Greater Boston. Dr. DeVoy describes MFC’s work as “nimble and alive. That’s what I love. It’s very exciting to work with.” Throughout her career, she has been drawn toward finding ways to support the development of people because she loves to watch individuals develop and flourish. “Being a developmental psychologist makes me think about the contextual impact that MFC has. I believe improving the life of anyone involved in MFC improves so many other people’s lives who they are connected with. There is a contextual ripple.” Through her studies pursuing her M.B.A., she grew passionate about finding new ways to use the tools of business to be an instrument for positive social change. Specifically, she believes the circular economy presents new opportunities to advance environmental justice, racial justice, and women’s empowerment, which are the quintessential aspects of what MFC is all about as an organization.

Reflecting on how her awareness about sustainability within fashion has changed over the years, she says, “I think a lot about how we should dispose of gently worn clothes. I have not bought denim in a couple of years, and I can’t really see myself ever buying another new pair of jeans. That’s a good thing; when I carry around an MFC product or another product that is upcycled or secondhand, I feel positive about it. There is a healing energy and positive vibes that follow these products.”

Areas of Focus at MFC:

Dr. DeVoy has served as an MFC board member since June 2017 and is a co-founder of MFC. In her current role, she oversees the development of research initiatives and partnerships that aim to study the global environmental and social impacts of post-consumer fashion pollution in collaboration with MFC and the MFI Foundation. She is also the Principal Investigator for The Aftermath Learning Lab.
